Fostering Emotional and Social Growth in Inclusive Classrooms (Secondary)

This workshop is designed to support secondary school teachers in fostering Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) skills, addressing the complex emotional and social situations faced by adolescents including students with special educational needs. The focus will be on helping students take responsibility for their actions, improve social awareness and develop responsible decision-making skills. Participants will engage in discussions, case study and role-play that reflect real-life scenarios typical of adolescence, such as peer pressure, conflict resolution and managing emotional stress. Teachers will also learn strategies to embed SEL into academic content, encouraging independence and resilience in students, that encourages personal growth and responsible behaviour.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the core components of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and its relevance to adolescents.
  • Develop strategies to encourage students to take responsibility for their actions and reflect on the consequences of their decisions.
  • Engage in discussions, case studies and role-play scenarios that address the complex social-emotional issues faced by adolescents such as neglect, peer pressure and conflict resolution.
  • Apply SEL techniques to help students navigate challenging social situations and foster positive peer relationships.
  • Create a classroom environment that supports emotional resilience, empathy and the development of responsible behaviours, preparing students for future challenges and transitions.

About the Presenter: 

Mrs Liza Ow

Mrs. Liza Ow is a dedicated educator whose passion for teaching has been unwavering for the past 36 years. Teaching is not just a profession but a calling, rooted in core values of Resilience, Respect, Integrity, and Commitment. With a strong belief that every individual possesses the potential to learn, grow, and contribute meaningfully to society, Mrs. Ow has worked extensively with students aged 7 to 18, ensuring that their diverse abilities are nurtured and recognized.

Since 2005, Mrs. Ow has collaborated closely with teachers, professors, and curriculum specialists from the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the National Institute of Education (NIE) to review and develop holistic, person-centred curricula across various subjects and learning domains. Leveraging on future-oriented pedagogical practices and Information & Communication Technology as the enablers, Mrs. Ow is dedicated to enriching and transforming the educational experience for adult learners, empowering them to co-create knowledge, engage in dialogic inquiry, and develop metacognitive capabilities.

Mrs. Ow’s love for teaching, coupled with extensive experience in courseware development, has led to the cultivation of a unique set of skills in curriculum planning, pedagogy, and assessment design. These skills are harnessed to help every learner reach their educational or professional development goals, making her a respected advocate and leader in the field of education.
