The Science of Learning: Memory Masterclass

The Science of Learning: Memory Masterclass is a workshop designed to deepen participants' understanding of the science of memory and its impact on learning. Participants will explore a range of topics, including encoding, working memory, cognitive load theory, and dual coding. The masterclass will also provide practical tasks inside and outside the classroom to help participants implement retrieval practice and evidence-based strategies in their teaching and learning. By the end of the workshop, participants will have an in-depth understanding of the latest research on memory and learning, and practical strategies to enhance teaching and learning outcomes in the classroom.

Learning outcome:

Participants will be able to...

  • Gain an understanding of the latest research on memory and learning, including the different types of memory and how they interact with each other.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of memory components, such as encoding, working memory, and long-term memory.
  • Learn evidence-based teaching and learning strategies to enhance student outcomes, including cognitive load theory and dual coding.
  • Understand the importance of retrieval practice for enhancing long-term memory retention and learn how to implement it in the classroom.
  • Develop practical strategies for supporting working memory in the classroom and embedding retrieval practice and evidence-based strategies into teaching and learning.

Here are some key takeaways from the participants that may interest you:

  • Kate's extensive collection of resources greatly enhanced the learning experience, providing valuable tools for further exploration and application.
  • The workshop illuminated insightful, research-based practices that can be directly applied in the classroom.
  • Participants gained a deepened understanding of key concepts, such as working memory, retrieval practice, and the distinction between encoding and storage in terms of memory.
  • The workshop shed light on how to teach in ways that strengthen students' memory, emphasizing the importance of exposing students to new information in varied ways to consolidate their learning.
  • The session underscored the importance of retrieval practice - a technique that boosts learning by pulling information out of students’ minds, rather than pushing information in. This vital life skill should be integrated into the learning system.
  • Kate's generosity in sharing recommended books, papers, and free resources was greatly appreciated, adding even more value to the workshop.
  • The workshop's structure and timing were commended for being concise and efficient, ensuring it was engaging and beneficial without being overwhelming.
  • Practical strategies shared for retrieval practice were found to be particularly effective and applicable for everyday teaching.
