Learning Make Visible

What are the effective practices in ensuring that students engage in learning and achieve success?  We’ll explore several signature practices from the Visible Learning database, including teacher clarity, feedback, and instructional instruction.

Learning Intention:

We are learning about the signature practices that allow us to begin our visible learning journey.

Success Criteria:

  • I can describe the visible learning evidence base.
  • I can use the three clarity questions to design learning experiences for students.
  • I can explain the levels of learning and strategies aligned with each level.
  • I can describe the continuum of engagement and its use in the classroom.
  • I can explain the six aspects of students who drive their own learning.
  • I can design intentional learning experiences for students based on the gradual release of responsibility framework.
  • I can explain the value of practice and the strategies useful in developing deliberate practice experiences.

About the Presenter: 

Dr Douglas Fisher

Dr Douglas Fisher is a professor and chair of educational leadership at San Diego State University where he focuses on policies and practices in literacy and school leadership. Doug is a credentialed teacher and administrator in California. He has published over 250 books, chapters, and articles focused on school improvement and was elected into the Reading Hall of Fame in 2022. Additionally, he is a teacher leader at Health Sciences High & Middle College, an award-winning, open-enrollment public school in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego that he co-founded in 2007. His areas of interest include instructional design, curriculum development, and professional learning. A passionate educator, Fisher's work is dedicated to impacting professional learning communities and nurturing the knowledge and skills of caring teachers and school leaders so they may help students improve their learning and attain their goals and aspirations. Previously, he was an early intervention teacher and elementary school educator. He has published numerous articles and books on literacy and leadership, teaching and learning, and improving student achievement.
