Design Thinking for Schools

This 2-day course is designed for any educator who would like to experience design thinking approach in problem solving and as an innovative way to create creative solutions. Learners will learn the different stages of the design thinking approach, and also the various methods supporting each of the stages.

Learning will be largely experiential in nature. Working in small groups, learners will gain first-hand experience working on a design challenge using the design thinking approach and methods.

Learn the 21st Century Skills, Stanford University Design Thinking, a methodology for creative problem solving. Educators can use it to inform their teaching practices or teach it to students as a framework for real-world projects.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the workshop, participants would be able to:

  • Understand the mindset and principles of design thinking process.
  • Apply the design thinking methods to solve problems and develop innovative & human-centred solutions.
  • Utilize the design thinking methodologies in their teaching or to teach students as a framework for real-world projects.

About Mr Michel Saw

Mr Michel Saw is a Senior Education Consultant at the Principals Academy and a retired school principal who is actively contributing his knowledge through part-time projects with the Ministry of Education.  An experienced educator of 4 decades, he had taught at secondary level for 13 years before serving in the leadership role for over 27 years.

A Champion for Innovation:- Mr. Michel Saw is recognized for his innovative and agile leadership style. As Minister Chan Chun Sing highlighted at the Appreciation and Appointment Ceremony of Principals on December 3rd, 2021, Michel consistently "inspired and supported his staff in pursuing new ideas for teaching and learning." This commitment to progress has driven his career across both secondary and primary schools.

A Diverse Education Journey:-  His career began with teaching Biology at Henderson Secondary School. He then transitioned to leadership roles, serving as Vice Principal at Damai Primary School. His principalship journey commenced at Keming Primary School, where he honed his skills before becoming the founding Principal of Innova Primary School. His career culminated at Edgefield Primary School.

About Mr Andrew Lee

Andrew has over 30 years of corporate, tertiary education teaching & training experience. He graduated from National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Science in 1992 and is currently pursuing the Harvard Extension School, Harvard University, Master of Arts (MA), Liberal Arts & Sciences, with a major in Sustainability. Andrew Lee is a corporate professional, an educator, a professional workshop trainer, and a Design Thinking Expert. He spent 15 years of his initial career managing marketing teams in some Fortune 500 companies like SONY, Suntory & L'Oreal Paris.

Currently, Andrew is an Associate Lecturer for SIM Global Education and RMIT University and he has been a lecturer and trainer for the past 17 years. His specializations include Design Thinking, Entrepreneurship, Marketing, and Brand Management. Andrew attained Design Thinking Certification from Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, completed Entrepreneurship Essentials programme from Harvard Business School, and Foundations for Digital Transformation programme from Stanford University.

Andrew has helped conduct professional Design Thinking & Service Experience Design workshops for Public Service Division (Prime Minister Office), Ministry of Manpower, MOE Secondary Schools & Primary Schools and multiple multi-national organisations & small-medium enterprises. Andrew was featured in multiple Singapore national newspaper on topics namely, Design Thinking and Marketing.
